This student described the "washout" distortion as how she saw text when trying to read. The black text would fade into the page as the brightness from the white page became dominant.
This student was excited to be given a copy of the "washout" distortion so she could explain to other people why she was finding reading so difficult...
"My teacher said I wasn't trying hard enough, but this is how all the tests I was given looked"
As for scantron answer sheets, even though she knew the answers she found it difficult to track across the line accurately and circle the correct answer!
She was excited to find a filter color combination that would even work under bright lights like those at school. She explained the filters made text look bolder so she could see the words enabling her to read fluently and fast. When she removed the spectral filters, she could no longer see the words. She did not want to take them off!
