Is my ‘NORMAL’ the same as yours? What is it like to live with Irlen Syndrome? Well, when you have this visual processing disorder it is often only when you see text with a colored overlay over it, or experience the world through colored Irlen glasses that you realize fully what you have been dealing with….. and that you are a WARRIOR!
That’s why we take the time at the Krist Samaritan Irlen Clinic (Houston/Galveston) to get the client to explain ‘in their own words’ how their world LOOKS and FEELS so we know what we are trying to alleviate.
Bianca is 24, when she reads she sees ‘letters coming out of letters’, she feels like her ‘eyes are going all over the page’ and text goes blurry. No wonder 20 mins of reading ‘seems like 3 hours’ and she feels ‘overwhelmed’ and can’t comprehend as ‘reading is like a foreign language, so I have to read the words over and over’. Bianca also has problems reading small text, even with her prescription eye glasses. During her Irlen Screening we found she needed 3 dark, blue overlays to be able to read under bright lighting (yes, we couldn’t even see the words but she could make them out clearly and read comfortably!)
Bianca returned to the Krist Samaritan Irlen Clinic 10 days later, as she couldn’t wait to find relief from her other symptoms. She opted for plano Irlen tinted lenses to be worn over her prescription contacts. In her own words she described differences as we added layer upon layer of color ‘I feel calmer already!’ ‘less brain fog, I feel awake’ ‘everything is clearer’ ‘my eyes don’t hurt’ ‘it feels natural, realistic’ ‘things are closer’ (which should also help reading small text). She is now excitedly waiting for the mailman to deliver her new Irlen glasses!
