How can you spot someone with Irlen Syndrome (visual processing disorder) when they are reading?
Traditionally you would LISTEN to them, and you can usually tell if reading is choppy, hesitant and not fluent…… but don’t forget to OBSERVE their face and body behavior as they read.
Isabel is 15 years old and was back to being an A student after a series of concussions, however she still had to put so much EFFORT into reading that she had frequent headaches and eye strain. Isabel and her mom came to the Krist Samaritan Irlen Clinic (Houston/Galveston) to see if Isabel could obtain relief using a colored reading overlay. I would encourage you to watch the following awareness video TWICE, once to concentrate on the difference in reading with and without an overlay, and once to watch the signs of strain on her face when reading without the overlay.
