Do you or your child: Never get to 20/20? Read out the letters in a different order or skip to another line? Suffer from light sensitivity due to some of the testing procedures? Find you don’t need a prescription but still have problems reading such as: words going blurry or moving, eyes hurting, getting a headache? You may have Irlen Syndrome
Irlen Syndrome is a visual processing difficulty that impacts on reading. It isn’t to do with the structure of the eye (whether you need an Rx) but how the signal from the eye is processed by the brain.
Gianna is 12 years old and was screened for Irlen Syndrome via Video Conferencing by the Krist Samaritan Irlen Clinic (Houston/Galveston). At this stage she was given overlays to use on top of one another to stop the words becoming blurry and shaky, and letters turning into ‘dots’.
Now Gianna also wears prescription glasses and had a history of failing the sight test even when wearing her Rx. Advice was given by the Irlen Center to use an overlay over the Eye Chart so that the Irlen distortions are removed and a more accurate Rx can be generated. The Eye Doctor allowed this modification.
In the VIDEO Gianna explains how this helped her by reducing the distortions.
