Irlen Overlays make reading more fluent and so help with comprehension

An 8 year boy who had been tested TWICE for DYSLEXIA, and found to be negative, visited the Krist Samaritan Irlen Clinic (Houston/Galveston) to see if a visual perception difficulty called IRLEN SYNDROME could explain his difficulties.
His mom reported that getting him to read was like “pulling teeth”, he easily became distracted and often “jumbled his letters up”. He suffered from visual stress, often rubbing his eyes and became so sleepy he had to rest his head on the table. Imagine ALL THAT EFFORT to do something other people enjoy!
During the Irlen Screening session we also found that looking at the white page without a colored overlay (clear plastic sheet placed over text) made his EYES HURT. Putting on fluorescent lights, like those in a classroom, increased the brightness of the white page and made things worse.
This 8 year old boy did screen positive for Irlen Syndrome. Watch the VIDEO which shows the contrast between FLUENT, ACCURATE reading and EASY TRACKING OF LINES with his colored overlay and HESITANT, WORD FOR WORD reading when the overlay is taken away.
