Accident prone? Clumsy? Knock things over? Lose your balance?
All of these issues could arise due to a visual processing difficulty called Irlen Syndrome. Irlen Syndrome is not to do with the structure of the eye, which can be ‘perfect’, but the signal that goes from the eye to the brain that gets ‘distorted’.
DJ is 13 years old and came to the Krist Samaritan Center, Houston/Galveston to find his specific Irlen color, to be worn in plano (no prescription ) lenses. As is usual we tested first to help with the visual distortions on the page and we found a color that helped stop the text becoming blurry and shaky. When I asked about ‘clumsiness’ his mom laughed, ‘oh yes!’.
In the video DJ lists his broken bones and sprains and demonstrates the difference in keeping his balance when wearing his colored lenses. DJ is sharing this video to make people aware that Irlen Syndrome isn’t just about difficulties reading!
