However, for Irlen Screenings it is your personal choice whether you want to come in at the moment, as the ones that have been conducted by Video Conferencing over the last 3 months have been successful. Indeed after people have seen the differences the mailed reading overlays made to them some have already come back for the Irlen glasses!
When you undertake an Irlen Screening via live Video Conferencing the test materials first appear on your screen and then the Krist Samaritan Irlen Clinic further validates the color(s) using a document camera, so you can actually see the difference the colored overlays make when placed over words and numbers.
An additional benefit with the Video Conferencing Screenings is children can feel relaxed in their home environment. Jack is 7 years old and loves animals. He showed me ‘Sonic’ during the session and we had a natural break whilst the family searched for him before the cat found him (he was OK don’t worry!)
We also found out why Jack gets frustrated when reading. Jack “can’t figure out the words”, he frequently mixes up similar looking words and although he knows sight words ends up just guessing based on the picture. We established in the Screening session that Jack has a problem with the contrast between the white page and the black text which causes the words to distort so he has to read close to the page to try to make them out.
