Meet Julie, the Director at the Irlen Clinic, Houston/Galveston.
Julie Yaxley (MA) is the Irlen Clinic Director at the Krist Samaritan Center, Houston/Galveston. She is an Irlen Diagnostician, trained by Helen Irlen herself, and can prescribe specific tints called Irlen®Spectral Filters (worn as glasses) and colored reading overlays (clear plastic sheets) that are placed over text or a computer. Each client needs a individualized color combination to calm the visual cortex and alleviate visual distortions and visual stress.
Julie herself has Irlen Syndrome and this motivates her to provide an individualized service to clients which includes generous appointment times. Irlen Syndrome is a life-long condition and children as young as 5 years old can be assessed, saving years of struggling and stress for the whole family.

We help raise awareness of Irlen Syndrome
And help our clients using the Irlen Method
This quick, non-invasive, two stage process can help anyone experiencing Irlen Symptoms, whether they are inherited or acquired via concussion or illness. Not only do clients obtain a clear indication of their problems, but they also receive color remediation.
Stage 1
Irlen Screening (2 Hours)
During the Screening we will discuss current difficulties, and do some short activities which are designed to bring on symptoms that occur during reading so they can be observed. If symptoms are present an overlay (clear, plastic sheet) of a particular color will be sought that can alleviate these difficulties.
Stage 2
Irlen Filter Diagnostic (3 Hours)
Please consult with Julie Yaxley before this appointment if an Rx is needed, to ensure the lenses are tintable. If you don't need an Rx you will simply order plano lenses during the tinting session from the Irlen Institute.
During the assessment a wide variety of colors are explored (and layered) and a variety of tests undertaken to find the optimal tint. The tint will not just aid reading but produce comfort in the environment under different lighting conditions and minimize distortions, sore eyes and headaches. Clients often also receive instant changes in depth perception and, additionally everything around them is brought into sharp, detailed focus.
Colored tinted lenses provided from other sources are NOT the same as Irlen®Spectral Filters provided by the Irlen Institute. Only certified Irlen Diagnosticians are trained to determine the specific frequencies to optimize performance from an almost limitless selection of filters.
Annually
Irlen Filter Check (2 Hours)
An annual color check is recommended. Clients find that growth spurts, illnesses or medication can affect the specific color that they need. The tint can also change gradually due to light exposure (just like any other tinted lens) so may become less effective.
